I don't think the uk is quite so extreme in our pundit versus scientist challenge, but it is still there.

As you pointed out - the 24 hour news cycle I think feeds the demand for punditry - it's more exciting to sell opinions than facts, and there is so much more air time to fill now - facts don't change , but pundits can inspire discourse and dialogue and ultimately sell!
