When it comes to employment, leaving a job can seem like an impossible task, especially when you have family and financial commitments. However, according to one palliative nurse, the top most common regret of the dying was ‘I wish I’d had the courage to live a life true to myself, not the life others expected of me.’ and the second was ‘I wish I hadn’t worked so hard’.

Once I worked for a large consultancy firm. I was recommended to them, and they took me on as an ‘experienced hire’ at the manager grade — old and ugly enough to have responsibility and be left on my own. At the time, I thought ‘this is it’ — this firm is gold standard, now I’ll learn everything I don’t know. The reality was far from it. Even on day one, I had an uneasy feeling in my stomach, that I wasn’t a good fit. It wasn’t that people weren’t nice (they were) it wasn’t that people weren’t smart (they were that too), I think it was the feeling of dog eat dog that permeated the culture. You had to be seen and known by the partners if you want to succeed, you had to work longer hours, do client work then company work in the evenings. it was something I’d already experienced, just not on that scale.
