Are we seeing an increase in public breakdowns caused by the media

What happens when your relevance is measured by how much you are talked about?

Attention!!! Look at me!!! If no one is talking about me, how do I know I am still relevant!!?

This is the problem with a society based on public recognition, measured in ‘likes; or ‘mentions’. It’s been playing on my mind owing to the recent interviews with Prince Harry. To me, regardless of what he says people have or haven’t done, this is clearly a man in need of some therapy. Some private therapy preferably. Yet those around him think it’s sensible to expose him to the world to get further judged, to pass judgement on others

The thing is, he’s bringing in a lot of money for many people. Maybe for himself too. And maybe he’s actually fine and happy to have a good old rant about his family. But is it really healthy to do it in such a public way?

Kanye West is another example of such behaviour. People get rich off his public breakdowns — and we the consumers feed it. So how do we stop this?

The first thing to consider is how the media can play a role in shaping public perception and understanding of mental health, and can also influence how mental health is portrayed in society more generally. The way that mental health is represented in the media can…
